CRUEL RIFLE YOBS SHOOT DONKEYS
Donkey owner Melanie Fisher
with Jed who was shot with an airgun
YOBS fired 50 air rifle pellets at Scarborough's beach donkeys, injuring one animal and damaging a fence which allowed others to escape.
Melanie Fisher, 34, who grazes her animals in a field near Weaponness Valley Close, found one of the pellets embedded in the neck of four-year-old donkey Jed, the biggest of the pack. She said: "He wouldn't let us near him he was that frightened. I couldn't believe it. I was horrified for them to do that."
Mrs Fisher, of Staintondale, said she had kept the pellet as evidence.
She added vandals had also damaged a fence surrounding another field near Queen Margaret's Road on Monday morning, allowing other animals to escape.
Geoff Edmond, the RSPCA inspector for the Scarborough area, said he was sure Jed had been injured by someone using an air rifle.
He said the animal's behaviour was out of character for a couple of days and he was suffering from shock.
He said: "I will be talking to the police to see if we can keep an eye on that area." Mr Edmond said the matter would be investigated because the culprits needed to be caught.
He said: "There is no excuse for this sort of cruelty against a defenceless animal."
PC Tim Gargan, of Scarborough police, described the recent shooting as "absolutely atrocious". He said: "These kids have got nothing better to do with their time than take pot shots at donkeys who've given hours of pleasure to visitors and locals."
Anyone with any information should contact Scarborough police on 0845 6060247 or call the RSPCA's public 24-hour cruelty and advice line on 0300 1234999.
