WHITEFIELD/LANCASHIRE: Hunt on for serial vandal

Hunt on for serial vandal

A SERIAL vandal is making life a misery for car owners in a Whitefield neighbourhood.

Over the past 12 months, a mystery offender has scratched dozens of cars parked in Radcliffe New Road and surrounding streets, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Police have carried out covert surveillance in the area to try and catch the vandal but he remains at large.

One resident, who lives in Radcliffe New Road, has spent nearly £2,000 in the last year in resprays and bodywork repairs.

He told the Guide: "My wife parks her car on the main road and has done for some time. Over the past year, the full length of the car has been scratched on five separate occasions and the wing mirror has been smashed right off twice.

"I reported this to the police at Whitefield, who informed me that it wasn't just us but they had reports from at least 20 other local residents in the Pilkington Park area suffering from the same problem.

"I hope to hear from other victims so we can gather as much evidence on the offender and bring him to justice."

Sergeant Mike Kennedy, from Whitefield police, said efforts had been made to catch the vandal in the act.

He added: "We believe the offender is a local resident but without any physical evidence or witnesses to what he is doing then there is very little we can do at the moment. Our investigation is ongoing and we can reassure residents in the area that further covert surveillance will take place."

Anyone who has been a victim of the car vandal can contact the resident by email at sjf@iesprod.fsnet.co.uk Residents who witness the offender attacking their vehicles should call Whitefield police on (0161) 872 5050.
