Booze banned in bid to stop young yobs
Twenty businesses have taken the unusual step of refusing to sell alcohol to people under the age of 21 unless they can prove their age - in a bid to stamp out anti-social behaviour.
Shops, newsagents and off-licences in the Broadland area are voluntarily agreeing not to sell liquor to those who are under 21 unless they can prove their age - even though the legal age for buying alcohol is 18.
The businesses which have signed up for the scheme are displaying posters in the window to state their allegiance to the scheme.
Lisa Kanapathy, owner of Old Catton Stores, St Faiths Road, Norwich, said she signed up because it she felt it was better for all the community.
She said: “It makes everyone feel a bit more secure knowing younger people won't have access to alcohol.”
Police forces and Broadland District Council set up the scheme under the umbrella of the Broadland Community Safety Partnership.
The initiative has teamed up with businesses selling booze in Taverham, Drayton, Hellesdon, Old Catton, Sprowston and Thorpe St Andrew.
Sgt Jeff Gover from the Hellesdon and Horsford Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) said: “We want to address the issue of people aged between 18 and 20 who are buying alcohol and supplying it to under-age youngsters.
“Some premises have had problems with intimidation by young people wanting to buy alcohol and others have reported issues of groups hanging around outside premises and being supplied with alcohol by those who are legally old enough to buy.”
