A teenager has been stabbed on the steps of Selkirk Sheriff Court while waiting for his trial to begin.

Daniel Whigham, 19, was smoking a cigarette outside the building when he was attacked by a man with a weapon.

He staggered into the main court room shouting he had been stabbed before being taken to hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

Mr Whigham had been due to stand trial accused of firing air pellets at a man. A new date was set for 18 December.

Search began

Police re-inforcements were called to the building on Tuesday morning as the incident unfolded.

A search began for the man Mr Whigham, of Whitefield Crescent, Newtown St Boswells, claimed had attacked him.

After being treated in a witness room by paramedics he was taken by ambulance to Borders General Hospital.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police confirmed they had attended an incident at Selkirk Sheriff Court and said their inquiries were continuing.
