REPORTS of a fire crew subjected to abuse by a gang of up to 30 youths who also caused damage to equipment have sparked outrage.
A report in the Evening Telegraph revealed details of the incident in Corby on Wednesday, when a crew called to deal with a fire involving rubbish and a tree was subjected to intimidation by yobs.
As the crew drove away after putting out the blaze, the mindless vandals climbed on to the appliance, causing hundreds of pounds of damage to equipment.
Comments left on the ET website at www.northantset.co.uk included one from Kirsty, in Corby, who said: "The parents rarely care about where their children are or what they are doing.
"Yes, it's true there needs to be more here for the youngsters but what's the point when they wreck anything given to them?"
While John M, of Whitstable in Kent, said: "Why, oh why, do I hear the same excuse when youngsters get up to mischief, 'they are bored with nothing to do'?
"The real cause is that they are brought up with too many things of value, that they just take for granted, ie computer games etc.
"Things are just too easy for the children of today. Perhaps if they had to earn these things instead of the parents thrusting items on them because they never had them, it might go a long way to help.
"Not only that, the do-good society stops parents from correcting their offspring by giving them a good talking to when they have done wrong.
"I was brought up to respect other people and their property. Now I am in my sixties I can see where we have gone wrong as a society."
And a reader from Kettering, who used the name cleverzippy, added: "Corby could be a great place to live, just look where it's situated, surrounded by beautiful countryside, but there are just too many jobless scroungers living there.
"Bring proper jobs to Corby, not endless warehousing. Root out the problem families and that will be a great start."
