08/13/2007 -- A man who died after a confrontation with a gang of youths in Warrington has been named by Cheshire Police. Flowers were left at the scene of the incident along with a card which described Garry Newlove as "a true hero". The 47-year-old died after tackling a gang outside his house in a street - Station Road North - which neighbours said had suffered anti-social behaviour for a year. The youths are believed to have smashed the window of a mechanical digger parked in Mr Newlove's driveway. A tribute placed near where he was attacked read: "A true hero. Trying to take our street back. Standing up for what is right. God bless." Cheshire Police said Mr Newlove met local officers in May to discuss youth disorder and setting up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. A neighbour, Andrew Brocklehurst, 20, said: "I heard reports someone had kicked his car and he had gone out and tried to move them on and as far as I know that's when they attacked him. "It's a shock, it really is, it's not such a bad area and this is just a guy trying to defend his own property and he's been killed." Six young males, aged 15 to 19, are being questioned after police launched a murder inquiry. Chief Inspector Martin Cleworth, who is in charge of the investigation, said police officers are making good progress. He added: "I would appeal to any young people who were present on Friday night to search their conscience and consider whether they know anything about the death of this father of three daughters." After being attacked at around 10:45pm on Friday, the man was taken to Warrington General Hospital but died on Sunday with his family by his bedside. |

after being advised 3 weeks ago by our local police not to press charges against local youths who attacked our home,("incase it made things worse for us")we were attacked on wed the 18th june in our home again by one of the youths who has a knowen mental health problem.999 was dialed 3 times over a twenty minute period by which time my husband had been kicked unconcious by the thug who had time to go away and return with his father and brother.we had no option but to try and defend ourselfs and when the police turned up they arrested everyone including myself,my husband was nt even x rayed at the hospital and was brought back to the police station.however,we were released the following morning and the chief inspector of fife police came to see us on the thursday evening apologising and said he would be investigating why the police did not recieve my first 2 999 calls. What a joke !!!!the boy in question is still wandering our streets drinking and as its a friday night i am sitting in fear that he will have another brainstorm and come back.
