Banned from town centre
Banned: Ian Kerr
knife-carrying trouble-maker — currently serving a six month jail term for a string of offences — has been banned from Chesterfield town centre for three years on his release.
Ian Kerr (34), of Queen Victoria Road, New Tupton, pleaded guilty to being in possession of a blade in public, common assault, attempted theft from a motor vehicle, and two counts of theft from a shop at Chesterfield Magistrates' Court on August 15.
He was sentenced to 24 weeks in custody for the offences, which were committed between April 19 and June 21.
At the hearing, Chesterfield police successfully applied to impose a three-year Anti-Social Behaviour Order on Kerr, which will commence on his release from jail.
The terms of the ASBO mean Kerr can be arrested if he enters Chesterfield town centre at any time, or if he is spotted with alcohol in an open bottle or glass in a public place – except licensed premises – anywhere in Derbyshire.
He must not act in a manner which causes harassment, alarm or distress to any person, and the offender could face up to five years in prison and a fine if he breaches any of the conditions.
He said: "His anti-social behaviour was frequently fuelled by alcohol and drugs, and he was often verbally abusive and intimidating to the people who work in Chesterfield town centre.
"The ASBO terms might look Draconian, but people need to be able to come to work and shop in the town centre in the knowledge that if any person does act in an anti-social manner, then these are the measures that are going to be taken out against them.
"It will be effective. He's a well-known man about town and people will be more than ready to report him."
% Should Kerr breach of the terms of his ASBO on his release, witnesses should contact Derbyshire Police on 0845 123 3333 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
