A 64-year-old woman and her husband needed hospital treatment after two youths threw stones at a train.

The two boys were throwing stones at the Manchester Piccadilly train as it was approaching the Apethorne Junction on Monday afternoon, police said.

One of the stones smashed a window and struck the woman above her eye. She was taken to hospital where she was given stitches, police said.

Her 62-year-old husband is also being treated for glass in his eye.

Serious attack

The two teenagers are thought to be between 14 and 16 and were wearing hooded tops.

British Transport Police (BTP) Sgt Les Peters said: "This was a very dangerous act of vandalism that has caused serious injury.

"Those responsible would do well to come forward now to mitigate the seriousness of what they have done.

"We would urge anyone with information to contact us immediately."
