INVERNESS: Yobs stone town bus

Yobs stone town bus

A BUS window was smashed by stone-throwing yobs as it was being driven in Elgin town centre.

Police are investigating the incident late on Wednesday night in the Borough Briggs Road area of the town.

The incident, involving a bus carrying passengers, happened at around 11pm.

No one was injured as a result of the attack, which left the interior showered with broken glass.

Inspector Craig Donald said that the incident was being treated as reckless conduct.

He added: "The stone actually entered the cabin, so as well as broken glass flying about, the driver or one of the passengers could have been hit by the stone coming through the window.

"There could have been very serious consequences. We have information from the driver, but we would also be keen to talk to passengers who were on the bus at the time.

"The driver would have been concentrating on the road and driving, so he may not have taken a great deal of notice of descriptions and such like."

Police are also keen to talk to a number of teenagers seen in the area at the time. A group of youths, males and females around 15 years of age, are being urged to come forward and possibly eliminate themselves from the inquiry.

There has been a series of similar incidents in Elgin in recent months. In March, two buses were stoned within a matter of hours of each other in New Elgin, and in December a driver had a lucky escape when he was struck with what is believed to have been an air gun pellet fired through his windscreen in South Lesmurdie.

Anyone with information about the latest incident is asked to contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5 700 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
