An off-duty policeman told yesterday how he came face to face with lawless Britain when a drunken yob lunged at him with a four-inch knife.

Sergeant Tim Robson, 41, challenged a group of thugs who were drinking in the street of a quiet market town in broad daylight.

Dressed in civilian clothes, he told them he was a police officer. One leapt towards him with a knife and screamed: "Come on, f***ing come on, then. Come on, you t***er."

Sgt Robson called for assistance and left the mobile phone line open so his colleagues could hear what was happening. He called to passers-by to witness the incident in Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.

He said: "I was cycling past when a group yelled and swore at me. One pulled a lock knife from his pocket and waved it towards me. As he lunged forwards, I moved back. I told him I was an off-duty police officer, but he just sneered and kept brandishing the knife."

A 17-year-old youth will appear before Consett magistrates tomorrow charged with affray.
