Bristol: Graffiti vandal sentenced after admitting string of offences

A vandal linked to over 1,000 graffiti incidents causing more than £200,000 worth of damage has been sentenced today (September 21).

Daniel Tyndale, 21, who has had addresses in St Philips, Bristol and Devizes, Wiltshire, received a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years after admitting a series of offences. He has been given 300 hours community service.

He was charged with nine counts of criminal damage with 350 other grafitti offences being taken in to consideration.

Tyndale sprayed graffiti on numerous locations including the listed Bristol University Psychology building, a van on Gloucester Road, the Polish Church on Cheltenham Road, a shop near Christmas Steps, Newfoundland Road police station and the metal footbridge near Bower Ashton.

He also targeted railway property which resulted in further offences being brought by British Transport Police.

Superintendent Ian Smith said: "We treat graffiti as anti-social behaviour. It is more than just defacing property; it causes distress, inconvenience and expense to people and we take it very seriously.

"We do not tolerate this kind of behaviour and today's sentence will send a strong message to others that spraying graffiti on building can have serious consequences."

Tyndale has also been given a five year anti social behaviour order that orders him not to access any prohibited Network Rail property and not to carry graffiti related materials.

Bristol City Councillor Judith Price, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, said: "This is a great result for everyone involved in bringing the offender to justice.

"We are working with the police and other agencies to tackle graffiti and tagging, removing it as quickly as possible - with racist and other offensive graffiti usually removed within 48 hours of our hearing about it."

Anyone who wants to report graffiti should call the Bristol City Council customer services helpline on 0117 922 3838.
