Daniel Churchill is only left with the lead and collar after his dog was attacked.
A puppy died horrifically after yobs impaled it on a mop.
RSPCA Inspector Emma Ellis described the incident as the most horrendous act of cruelty she had ever witnessed. She is now urging people to come forward to catch the callous animal-haters who attacked the lurcher called Kain.
Grandad Robert Churchill, 70, bought the pup for his 13-year-old grandson Daniel, just days before the horrific attack happened outside their home on Exeter Street, Pallion.
Both were inconsolable when they came home from a night out to find their beloved pet lying on the ground in the backyard – a mop rammed so far down its throat that the other end came out of its back leg.
Daniel, who spends his pocket money every week on Countryman's Weekly, a magazine dedicated to dogs, had always dreamed of owning a lurcher of his own and is devastated by the attack.
Grandad Robert, a retired miner, said: "He went running down the street in tears. We were all in tears actually, everyone was in a right state.
"It was absolutely sick – we couldn't believe that someone would do that. He was such a lovely dog as well, we were all devastated, especially Daniel."
It is thought the thug who attacked the dog must have jumped over the family's back wall as there is no other access to the yard.
Robert says he has no idea who would have carried out such a gruesome attack and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
RSPCA Inspector Emma Ellis was called to the family's home after a vet was forced to put the dog to sleep to avoid any further pain.
She said: "It's the most horrendous thing I have ever experienced in my whole life. It was unbelievable – honestly the worst thing I have ever seen.
"The problem is we are having trouble getting to the bottom of this case because there are no witnesses or suspects – we have no clue at all.
"We would urge anyone who saw something to call the RSPCA immediately."
The attack happened on Friday, May 9, between 7pm and 10pm. Anyone with information should call 08705 555 999.
