PORTSLADE: Yobs trash park in vandalism spree

Yobs trash park in vandalism spree

Vandals left a trail of destruction costing thousands of pounds as they trashed a public park.

The culprits drove onto a football pitch and performed handbrake turns, leaving tyremarks in the turf at Easthill Park in Portslade.

They covered walls with graffiti and broke a bench in the spree, which was discovered this morning.

Rubbish bins were thrown around the park and tiles on the toilet roof were damaged.

The vandals also broke paving slabs in the children's play area.

Police branded the crime "disgraceful".

Community Support Officer Nick Packham said: "This has had such an impact of the local community who use the park's facilities.

"Whoever is responsible for all this damage ought to be ashamed of themselves. It's mindless vandalism at its very worst.

"I hope that anyone with information will contact police so those responsible can be dealt with."

The park boasts a walled garden, war memorial and wildflower area.

It was once part of the 750-acre estate of Edward Blaker at Easthill House.

City councillor Bob Carden said the vandalism was part of a trend in the area.

He said: "We're getting an awful lot of problems over here. I don't know why they do it."

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 quoting reference 386/13/09/2007.
