WINDEMERE: Yobs attack historic clock

Yobs attack historic clock

VANDALS have been slammed after causing £1,000-worth of damage to a town landmark in its centenary year.

Baddeley Clock, in Windermere, was smashed with stones in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday.

Windermere police say two people were seen running away from the scene at Millennium Garden.

A spokesperson for Cumbria police said the protective cover and face were damaged.

The clock is a memorial to Mountford John Baddeley, a late 19th and early 20th century author who wrote a guide book about the English Lake District.

The tribute was erected in 1907 and Windermere Town Council is planning an event to mark the centenary year.

The town council hope schools will be involved in the occasion.

Council clerk Brian Whittaker said: “It’s just mindless vandalism.”

Former town councillor Yvonne Stewart-Taylor is shocked by the attack.

Mrs Stewart, who took part in a Millennium project at the garden with schoolchildren during her time as a councillor, said: “I think it is just appalling. This year is the centenary of Baddeley Clock. It is very sad and shocking vandalism.”

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call PC Keith Williams at Windermere Police Station on 0845 33 00 247.
