A teenager drowned in a lake after yobs pelted him with rocks to stop him climbing out.
Shane Owoo was pushed into the water after a heated argument with a gang of thugs, according to witnesses.
Shane's friends revealed the row may have stemmed from allegations that the youngster had stolen a bike.
Police scoured the former clay pit for four hours on Saturday afternoon in vain before calling in diving teams.
Shane's body was eventually recovered at 10.15am yesterday. Police have now launched a murder inquiry.
Friend Kevin Smith, 17, said: 'One of the lads grabbed Shane and threw him into the water. He started to climb out but to stop him from doing so they were throwing rocks, stones, anything they could find.
'I don't know if one of these missiles actually hit him but he went under the water and wasn't seen again.' Shane's father, James Owoo, said: 'How could anyone do that to such a young lad? It's horrific. He was a wonderful lad – the best son any father could ask for.
'He had his whole life in front of him. He was always respectful to people and had a cheeky charm about him.'
The tragedy happened at Lunt Pool in Bilston, West Midlands.
Three men in their early 20s have been arrested over Shane's death and are due to be interviewed by West Midlands officers.
Det Insp Mark Payne, who is leading the inquiry, called for anyone who saw anything suspicious to come forward.
He said: 'A significant line of inquiry is that Shane was involved in some sort of incident with a group of men near Bickley Road at about lunchtime on Saturday.'
