Vandals have wrecked a memorial in honour of a North-east soldier shot dead in Iraq.

The yobs caused thousands of pounds of damage when they ripped up a skate park.

The devastated parents of Lance Corporal Allan Douglas today branded the vandal attack "disrespectful".

The park was created in Northfield in memory of the 22-year-old who used to play there.

Cash was raised for the park by nearby residents through various fundraising events and the Community Regeneration Fund.

But more than £4,000 of damage was caused when vandals tore up panels from the park's ramps.

Allan's mum Diane, 56, said: "I was in tears, it is just so hurtful.

"The park is barely open and already it has been slashed down.

"It was so nice of the community to do this for us in memory of Allan.

"It is sickening and disrespectful.

"I can't understand why anyone would do this.

"I'm terrified of it happening again and ask anyone with information to come forward.

"I'm begging them not to do it again."

Allan, pictured, became the 99th British serviceman - and the 15th Scot - to lose his life in Iraq since troops were sent in 2003.

The former Northfield Academy pupil was shot while serving with the 1st Battalion The Highlanders in the Maysan Province, near the Iranian border, in January last year.

Allan's dad Walter, 57, said: "It's an honour for Allan and for us to have the park named after him. It is so sad that this has happened."

As a child Allan used to play in the park, which is next to Quarry Road, Deansloch Crescent and Kettlehills Crescent.

Pc Arlene Strachan said: "It is extremely disappointing that one or two bad pennies should get the wrong kind of pleasure from this superb facility which has been provided for local youngsters."

She said police were following a positive line of inquiry. Police and community warden patrols in the area have been stepped up since the attack.

She added: "The skate park is well used and I would welcome any information which may assist in identifying the persons responsible."
