SOUTH SHIELDS: Yobs kill Koi carp in pond

Yobs kill Koi carp in pond

A DAD has hit out at yobs who killed his Koi carp by pouring washing-up liquid into their pond.
The tiny fish, each just a few inches long, had been in Darren Corkin's back garden for only two months when the attack took place.

The 19 fish, worth about £100 in total, are believed to have suffocated after the pond was filled with bubbles.

Mr Corkin, 34, from Lavender Lane, West Harton, South Shields, discovered the cruel act after returning home.

The father-of-three said: "Ever since I got the fish, I went out and checked them every night. This night I went out and the pond was just a massive bubble.

"I was so angry. I only had the Koi carp for a couple of months.

"I have always had fish, but I was getting the garden done, so decided to put a pond in.

"I was told two of the Koi carp were quite rare. It was a nasty thing that happened. All I wanted was a nice garden
for the kids to play in and this happens.

"The two oldest children were devastated when they found out."

A specialist was needed to decontaminate the pond after the dead fish were removed, but Mr Corkin is wary of replacing them.

He said: "I'm just going to put goldfish in this time. I can't afford to keep putting Koi carp in if this is going to happen."

Koi carp are one of the most expensive fish, with some of the rarest breeds valued at thousands of pounds.

They were bred by the Chinese and are widespread in Japan. They are known as ornamental fish because of their bright colours.

If kept properly, Koi can live between 25 and 150 years. Some have lived up to 200 years.

Police are investigating the incident on August 12, and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact South Tyneside Area Command on (08456) 043 043.
