COVENTRY: Drunken yobs making lives a misery

Drunken yobs making lives a misery

THE daily fear and misery caused by drunken yobs plaguing a Coventry neighbourhood has driven one elderly woman to despair.

Fed up with the nightly antics of gangs she has lambasted the city council for "creating a monster that's out of control".

The woman, who is in her 70s and lives with her husband near Radford Common, says since a £150,000 play area was built, locals have been terrorised by youths.

The issue came to a head at a fiery meeting on Tuesday night when 30 residents left a panel of police and council staff in no doubt about their anger.

As reported yesterday, they shouted down the panel by listing ongoing problems caused by gangs gathering at the park, including late-night noise, under-age drinking and litter.

One resident shouted at the panel: "You don't have to live there, we do.

"We sit there and watch people beat each other up in the playground."

Another said: "We have lost 25 per cent on what our house is worth since the park was built.

"We are living a nightmare."

The elderly resident, who wants to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, has written an open letter to the council spelling out the nightmare she and others have to live with.

She wrote: "Since the council has put a range of swings, slides and climbing equipment on Radford Common for young children, we have been plagued by gangs of drunken youths and destructive teenagers.

"(They) have smashed walls down, damaged cars and generally caused mayhem day and night.
