A TOWN centre resident has hit out at anti-social behaviour amongst Bridgwater's youths - citing an incident where a group were claimed to be seen sniffing solvents less than 30ft away from a church memorial service.

The resident - who does not wish to be identified - claims the incident happened on Sunday morning (September 16), during a formal ceremony at St Mary's Church attended by various dignitaries, the British Legion, and boy's brigade.

As the town representatives filed into the church, less than 30ft away, three youths lay on the grass sniffing solvents in clear view.

The resident said that he contacted the police, but despite this, the youths carried on sniffing, taking no notice of the activities taking place a few feet away.

He added: "As a town centre resident who has had no less than 15 windowpanes broken in the last three years, I get the feeling the town centre has been left to the mercy of drunk and disorderly youths without any real action to reduce it."

He thinks the trouble escalates at weekends when "the streets become battle zones as kids wonder drunkenly between bars and clubs hell bent on causing trouble".

Police spokesman Darren Bane said police were called to reports of two girls and one boy sniffing solvents on the churchyard, but found no trace upon arrival.

"Officers were called just after 11am and arrived on the scene around 20 minutes later," he said. "We do take these reports seriously and we are grateful for the call.

"We would ask for anyone with any information to please contact us."

If you have any information on this incident, contact Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
