LEIGH/ESSEX: Scout leaders beaten by yobs

Scout leaders beaten by yobs

TWO Sea Scout leaders have been badly beaten by yobs after stepping in to help a man being attacked by a gang.

The two leaders heard the fight, near Mike's Boatyard, in High Street, Leigh, as they were setting up equipment for the Leigh Regatta about 12.30am on Sunday.

When they tried to intervene, the thugs turned on them.

The Scout leaders, aged 25 and 36, were treated at Southend Hospital for injuries to their faces, including black eyes and cuts which needed stitches. It is believed they were released the same day.

Dave Clark, a former assistant Sea Scout master at Leigh, said: "These good Samaritans saw about 15 drunken yobs kicking some young guy on the floor and they had to step in.

"It's an awful thing to have happened."

Insp Dave Cowell, of Leigh police, said there had been some problems with a group of youths in the area that night and officers had moved them on several times.

He said: "Whether these youths are part of the attack, I don't know. It will form part of the investigation.

"We did a thorough search of the area for the offenders soon after the attack, but no one was found. These were local lads who had to be treated for facial injuries, because they dared to stand up to someone.

"We are appealing for any witnesses in the area at the time to come forward."

Officers will be carrying out door-to-door inquiries and asking local businesses to check their CCTV footage in case anything has been recorded.

The regatta is an annual charity event which helps to raise funds for the 4th/6th Sea Scouts, 3rd Chalkwell Bay Sea Scouts, the Southend West District Activity Centre and the charity, United Against Cancer.

Anyone with any information about the attack, or who saw anything suspicious around Old Leigh or Leigh station, can call police on 01702 471212 or Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555111.
