RADCLIFFE/BOLTON: Yobs throw fireworks at 999 crew

Yobs throw fireworks at 999 crew

A FIREWORK was thrown at firefighters as they attended a job in Radcliffe on Saturday night.

A crew from Whitefield was called to Ainsworth Road at 11.20pm because a firework had been put through a postbox.

As firefighters were at the scene, a group of 10 to 15 youths were across the road, and one threw a firework towards the officers.

Watch Commander Steve Simpson said: "This is something that should not happen.

"We are there to do a job and help people but unfortunately there is a mindless minority that make that difficult.

"People should not mess around with fireworks, but it is something we have to contend with every year. People who sell fireworks need to ask themselves if they are doing the right thing.

"At all times of the year we get people throwing things at us, but unfortunately these types of incidents are starting to get more frequent and are happening in areas where we wouldn't expect it to happen."

He warned: "All fire engines are fitted with CCTV cameras.

"Anyone caught on camera doing something they shouldn't will be prosecuted."

The firework had gone off and the crew used a dry powder extinguisher to put out the blaze. It is believed the fire will have damaged some, if not all, of the mail inside.

This is the second recent incident involving a firework.

On Thursday night, vandals pushed a firework through a letterbox in Lumsden Street, Daubhill.

A woman was woken by an alarm and the explosions, and rang the fire service from her bedroom.
