DAUBHILL/BOLTON: SICK vandals beheaded a dozen chickens during an allotments wrecking spree.

SICK vandals beheaded a dozen chickens during an allotments wrecking spree.

The 12 birds were butchered in a late night rampage which also saw greenhouse windows and shed panels smashed.

Heartbroken gardeners arrived to find a scene of devastation at the allotments off Settle Street in Daubhill.

They said they were constantly plagued by vandals and drug addicts living on the land.

"What happened is absolutely mindless and disgusting," said Kathleen Northey, chairman of the allotment association.

"There are people who put their heart and soul into tending to the land and it is absolutely devastating to see vandalism and cruelty like this.

"Nothing was stolen. They just seemed to want to cause damage to get some sort of kick out of it, which I can't understand."

The louts are thought to have struck between 10pm on Friday, September 7, and 7am the following morning.

Seven greenhouses were left with smashed panes of glass.

Mrs Northey said there had been a spate of recent attacks and break-ins by vandals and thieves at the allotments.

Gardeners had also arrived recently to find drug addicts asleep in sheds.

"It's getting to the point where people are terrified of going there in the morning and not knowing what they are going to find," she said. "People have had to wake drug addicts, but sometimes they refuse to move and just go back to sleep.

"There have been needles and all sorts left lying around."

Sgt Ian Brammer, of Bolton Police, said: "Clearly this was a heartless attack and would have been very distressing for the owners."
