CRISIS talks about escalating gang violence in Cheriton allowed terrified residents to put police officers on the spot.
Almost 100 local residents organised critical talks with police chiefs last week in a desperate bid to tackle the crime wave sweeping the area.
It followed months of worsening street crime that has seen a brick thrown through an elderly lady's bedroom window and one man given a broken nose after a vicious attack by a horde of yobs. One youth was arrested outside the hall in Narrabeen Road for an assault, just before the talks began.
The meeting last Wednesday was attended by 90 concerned residents and councillors who fired questions at Insp Ivan Pickering. Chairman of the Cheriton Residents' Association David Springett revealed that he had enough of the disorder.
He told the crowd: "It has got nastier than ever. "Just outside this meeting tonight, a young lad was arrested for an assault he had committed. And just the other day, an elderly lady I know, who shall remain nameless, was scared to death after she had a brick thrown through her bedroom window."
Mr Springett also admitted that he had experienced his very own confrontations with gangs.
He said: "I have been fighting this issue of gang violence in Cheriton for 10 years.
"The only way we will overcome it is if we work together and keep in constant communication with the police."
Proposals made by residents and Insp Pickering included the creation of a local youth club, motocross activities and the installation of surveillance cameras.
Insp Pickering, who grew up in Cheriton, said: "I have only been in this position for a few days now but I can assure Cheriton residents that I want to sort this situation out just as much as anyone else."
